A file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions after a man in his 20s was released from custody by Galway Gardai following an assault on a woman in Eyre Square.
Gardai in Millstreet have appealed for witnesses to the incident in the early hours of Monday morning in the city centre, which left a woman hospitalised with head injuries.
The incident happened around 3.30am close to the Imperial Hotel in Eyre Square when an altercation took place between a number of men.
A woman, who is in her 20s, intervened but was assaulted and had to be taken to University College Hospital. She was released from hospital later following treatment.
Gardai sealed off the area and a Scene of Crime unit carried out an examination of the area where the assault happened.
Gardai later arrested a man in his 20s under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and he was questioned at Mill Street station yesterday (Tuesday) about the incident. The man has since been released.
Gardai at Mill Street station (091-538000), who are examining CCTV footage in the Eyre Square area, have appealed for witnesses.
