A man, who is being held in custody charged in connection with a shooting in the city over a week ago which resulted in another man losing part of his hand, was further remanded in custody following his appearance before Galway District Court this week.

Anthony McDonagh (42) of Tulach Ard, Circular Road, Galway, is charged with having a sawn-off shotgun and cartridges in his possession with intent to endanger life at Whitestrand Road, Salthill, Galway on 18 April last.

For security reasons, the accused was not kept in the prisoners' section of the courtroom yesterday and was only brought briefly into court from the holding cells downstairs when his case was called. During the very brief remand hearing, inspector Pat McHugh applied to have McDonagh further remanded in custody to appear before Harristown District court in two weeks' time.

With the consent of defence solicitor, Olivia Traynor, Judge Mary Fahy remanded McDonagh in custody to appear before Harristown District Court on Friday 9 May next.

Martin Ward (21) of Corrach Buí, Rahoon, Galway, is recovering in hospital, having lost his thumb and a finger after being shot at point blank range while a number of pellets also lodged in his body.
