A 21-year-old man has been charged and remanded in custody following an aggravated burglary on the Headford Road on Monday.

Darren Herron of Cluain Fada, Headford Road was arrested in the early hours of Monday morning after he forced his way into a house in the early hours of Monday morning. It is understood that the house owner awoke during the break-in and raised the alarm, but suffered hand and chest wounds in the altercation that followed.

The victim was subsequently moved to University Hospital Galway for treatment, but his injuries are not said to be life threatening. The assailant was arrested by gardaí and charged under Section 3 of the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

Inspector Pat McHugh applied for Herron to be remanded in custody and told Judge O'Brien there would be further more serious charges laid against him at his next court appearance. There was no application for bail but Herron did apply for free legal aid.

Mr Herron will next appear before Galway District Court on Monday 1 September.
