The government has allocated over €30 million for social housing in Galway over the coming years.

A total of €30,850,000 has been allocated for the city's social housing, with €28 million going to new developments.

A spokesperson for the city council said it was considering the implications of the allocation for the social housing budget, and that it was currently advising councillors of the allocation.

According to Galway West TD Frank Fahey, the remainder of the money will go towards regeneration and remedial works, as well as housing for the Travelling community.

He said Galway City Council can use its own discretion in relation to the existing €20 million loan, which it received last year for the purchase of housing, choosing to defer repayment if necessary.

He also confirmed that €25,780,000 has been allocated for Galway County.

The funding allocation was also welcomed by Galway City Councillor, Mary Leahy who said the funding allocation was a very welcome increase on last year's €20 million allocation. "I am pleased that his will allow the officials in Galway City Council to take a pro-active approach for the development of a number of housing developments in the city," she added.
