Macnas has announced the appointment of its new artistic director, Renmore native Noeline Kavanagh. Noeline was the youngest ever director of the Macnas Festival Parade, 'Carnival of Fools' in 1998 and has since worked with numerous other groups nationally and internationally as a director, writer and performer including Welfare State International in Cumbria. She is currently engaged in projects in England and Iceland and will take up the post of Artistic Director in September. Noeline is charged with the task of steering the art of Macnas through the next chapter in its long history. The internationally renowned arts organisation based in Galway has been engaging communities in the creative experience for the last 22 years. Famed for the Macnas Festival Parade, one of the highlights of the Galway Arts Festival, Macnas has also staged many lavish theatre productions, as well as delivering year round training in making, performance, stilting and drumming from their workshop in the Fisheries Field. In recent times Macnas' artistic direction has been guided by an Artistic Team, which comprised a dedicated group of artists and practitioners. This team has done an excellent job in devising long term artistic plans for Macnas, but believe that the time has come to hand the responsibility of artistic direction to a single person. "We think that Noeline is the ideal person to take over from the Artistic Team," says John Ashton, General Manager of Macnas. "As a native of Galway city, she has a deep understanding of how Macnas works and what it stands for, and with her wide ranging artistic expertise and knowledge she is sure to be a significant inspiration to the company and indeed the City. Absolutely everyone in Macnas is very excited about working with her." |
