Dublin gangs are using the new M6 motorway to travel to Galway and raid empty houses, according to a local superintendent. Supt. Enda Walsh of Loughrea Gardai told the Galway Independent that he noticed a surge in the number of burglaries in the area following the opening of the motorway and subsequent arrests showed that the perpetrators were travelling from the Dublin area. While the beginning of 2010 has not seen the same frequency of these crimes, Supt Walsh believes that the bad weather may have put many criminals off and warned homeowners to be on the alert. "It's very important that people are vigilant and aware that there are people out there scouting around for houses to break into. Often they will knock on the door of houses to see if there is anyone there and if they don't get an answer, they break in. If someone does answer, then they'll just say they were looking for directions or a glass of water. "I would advise people to make sure there are no visible signs left if they are away for a few days, such as mail stuffed in the letterbox or that kind of thing. It's also a good idea to have a light turned on now and again until an alarm has been fitted." |
