A young girl and two adults had a lucky escape on Sunday when they plunged through the ice into Loughrea Lake. ![]() The girl had been walking close to the edge of the lake when she slipped through a section of ice that has been broken to allow swans to move. Her mother immediately dove into the water and was followed by another man. Luckily, a local man spotted the incident and pulled all three to safety. It is understood that none of those involved were injured. Gardai are advising the public to avoid the lake while the cold snap continues. John Leech of Irish Water Safety in Galway has repeated a warning to those thinking of walking on local lakes, saying "there is no such thing as safe ice". If a member of the public arrives on the scene of an emergency and needs to rescue someone who has fallen on the ice, they are advised to immediately call emergency services before trying to find something close by that will extend their reach, such as a ringbuoy or pole. They should never go out on to the ice and make sure that they are stable before attempting to pull anyone to safety. |
