Oranmore is to play host to a debate on the Lisbon Treaty. In the interest of disseminating information about the forthcoming treaty Fine Gael Senator Fidelma Healy Eames has organised a debate to take place on Thursday 29 May in the Oranmore Lodge Hotel at 8pm. The guest speakers on the night will be Fine Gael's Spokesperson on European Affairs, Lucinda Creighton TD, and Fine Gael Seanad Spokesperson on Justice, Senator Eugene Regan. All are welcome to attend. "I have attended numerous debates about the Referendum in recent weeks and I am concerned about the misinformation that is being bandied about it and the confusion that this is causing," said Senator Healy Eames. "A recent survey, which I carried out on the streets of Galway, showed that an alarming 91 per cent of people felt the Government hadn't adequately explained the Treaty and 65 per cent felt they had 'low' or 'very poor knowledge' of what the Treaty entails. It is important that people are given adequate information before 12 June so that they can make an informed decision." Senator Healy Eames has encouraged people to come to the debate to have their concerns aired and addressed and their questions answered. "I have asked Eugene and Lucinda to explain the advantages of Lisbon for Ireland, for workers, women, farmers and the economy. Fine Gael is committed to a 'YES' vote and have had a dynamic campaign up and running for several weeks now and, in the interest of balance I have requested that the 'NO' arguments are also addressed." |
