The Galway for a Democratic Europe group is to hold a "race to the bottom" event this Saturday on Shop St, to protest lowering wages and exploitation.

According to AJ Cahill, the group's spokesperson, "The EU has sponsored through the opening of markets without protections for citizens the development of the "Race to the Bottom" where wages are driven down by exploiting foreign workers while causing unemployment and loss of contracts for local workers and companies. This race to the bottom also provides an environment for racism to breed. The Lisbon treaty will promote and copper-fasten this race."

Mr Cahill encouraged people to come along for the race.

"So if you are feeling fit, like a low wage come then along and have a race with other workers for low wages. If you are feeling conned or bullied into agreeing to a treaty that will take Europe in the direction of a federal state where big business rather than the people are sovereign, come along because you will need to be fit but more importantly cheap to win this race."

"Forget the charter of fundamental rights baby, this is a race to the bottom," he said.

The event will begin at the corner of Shop St and Mainguard St at 1pm on Saturday.
