A house in Shanbally outside Craughwell was evacuated by its occupants on Saturday night after it was hit by a bolt of lightning, causing it to catch fire.

The fire, which started on the roof of the house just after 10.30pm, caused extensive damage to the property. The emergency services were alerted and two units, one from Athenry and one from Galway city, rushed to the blazing house. The fire was put out quickly but fire services stayed at the sight until late into the night to ensure that the fire was completely out.

The bad and very unsettled weekend weather left certain areas of Galway without any electricity as it disrupted power supplies.

Certain areas of Moycullen and Barna were left without power from early on Saturday evening but the power was more or less restored in most areas by midnight on Saturday night. The power shortages stretched as far as Ballyconneely, Craughwell and Turloughmore. The weekend was one of the busiest weekends that the ESB in Galway had experienced in recent times.
