Galway RNLI Lifeboat Flag Day takes place today, Wednesday, 19 December, with members of the lifeboat crew collecting donations on the city's streets from 9.30am to 5pm.

Galway RNLI Lifeboat Station, based at Galway Docks, is a voluntary service operated by a local highly-trained and committed volunteer crew who risk their own lives in often treacherous conditions to save lives at sea. The service is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Galway RNLI Lifeboat was first put on service on 27 March 1996 and since then has rescued over 210 people and launched over 284 times.

There are currently 20 active crew members with two extra shore crew. All crew are volunteers who give of their time freely. Fewer than ten per cent of crew come from a professional maritime background, hence crew training is of prime importance. Each crew member is highly trained and flexible.

Galway RNLI Lifeboat is not state-funded. It is a registered charity and is funded entirely by voluntary contributions and local fundraising efforts. All funds raised locally go towards the running of the Galway RNLI Lifeboat and the upkeep of the station. It costs more than €130,000 to run the station each year.
