The turnout for the Lisbon referendum may have been low on Thursday but the verdict came through loud and clear, when over 53 per cent of the Galway electorate chose to reject the controversial treaty.

82,778 voters turned up to polling stations all over the city and county last week, less than half of the 166,984 registered electorate.

In Galway East, Fianna Fáil Deputy Noel Treacy attended the count centre at Lewinn Leisure Centre, where 53 per cent voted against the Lisbon Treaty. The imminent result became apparent early in the day when towns such as Tuam, Dunmore, Headford and Glenamaddy voted two to one for a 'No' outcome.

Similarly in Galway West, Minister Eamon O Cuiv, former minister Frank Fahey and Fine Gael Deputy Padraig McCormack were all present at the count, which took place at NUI, Galway.

Connemara constituents voted overwhelmingly against the treaty, with polling stations in Clifden and Carna returning a No' vote of over 80 per cent. Fifty-four per cent of voters opted against ratifying the treaty, with a total of 23,011 'No' votes.
