Galway's Harbour Hotel, on the Dock Road, will be playing host to a lecture titled, 'English language daily newspapers in 20th Century: boon to or bane of the Irish Language?' on Monday, 8 September next.

Professor Nollaig Mac Congáil will be on hand to present and all are welcome to attend. Nollaig Mac Congáil was born in Derry City and holds a B.A. and Ph.D. from Queens University. He came to UCG in 1974 and is a Professor of Irish there since 1996, having also served as Dean of Arts from 1994 until 2000.

He is the author/editor of many books and articles on nearly all aspects of Modern Irish language and literature.

The lecture will trace the transition between Gaelic orality and English literacy, which facilitated in due course the spread of English language newspapers (national, local, daily, Sunday, weekly and evening) throughout Ireland.

It will examine in particular the history and nature of the adoption of the Irish language and its ideology by the four main dailies in the twentieth century viz. The Freeman's Journal, Irish Times, Irish Independent and Irish Press.
