Galway City Councillor Catherine Connolly has hit out at city manager Joe MacGrath, saying he has "reneged" on his promise to update councillors about the proposed Knocknacarra Community Centre. In a statement, Cllr Connolly said, "The continued failure to provide a community centre for Knocknacarra is utterly unacceptable and cannot be tolerated any longer. "The failure by the city manager to bring back the promised progress report on the proposals for a Knocknacarra Community Centre is simply appalling. "The city manager promised to have the Knocknacarra Community Centre as the first item on the city council meeting agenda for the December meeting. When it did not appear, the city manager then gave assurances that the Knocknacarra Community Centre would appear on January's meeting. Quite unbelievably, this has not happened." However, a spokesperson for Mr MacGrath stressed his commitment to developing a Community Centre in Knocknacarra. "City Manager, Joe MacGrath is currently liaising with the owners of the site with a view to bringing a comprehensive proposal to council for their consideration. There are a number of issues here, which we have to consider. The proposal is a significant one and requires that a number of detailed issues are agreed prior to placing it before the members for their consideration. It is progressing; we are meeting with the owners of the site this week and we will be bringing a proposal to council when the various issues have been determined and agreed." At Monday evening's City Council meeting, Mr MacGrath agreed to revert to councillors with a comprehensive report once more progress had been made on the issue, with Cllr Niall O Brolcháin saying it should be on February's agenda nonetheless. |
