The leadership may have been won outright by Galway’s Éamon Gilmore, but the Labour party is currently seeing a hotly contested race for the party’s deputy leadership, which will be brought to Galway tomorrow Thursday 20 September.

Limerick East’s Deputy Jan O’Sullivan and Dublin West’s Joan Burton, TD, are contesting the deputy leader position.

Hustings for the contest are being brought all over the country and Galway, with its high percentage of Labour representatives, is no exception.

The Labour hustings will take place at Flannery’s Hotel on the Dublin Road at 8pm and will be chaired by Galway City Mayor Tom Costello.

Galway’s Deputy Michael D Higgins told the Galway Independent yesterday that both women were “excellent candidates”, adding that the Galway hustings would welcome members of the Labour party from all over the West. It will also be Deputy Éamon Gilmore’s first visit back to Galway as party leader.
