“This is not meant to be a criticism of the city council officials. This is an effort to convince the city manager that a wrong decision was made by the city council when they decided to proceed with themselves as the lead agents for the Knocknacarra community centre. The proposal from the Moritz group is extremely attractive from the council’s point of view. I don’t accept their reasons for rejecting the plans as sufficient,” he said at a press conference held in the Clybaun Hotel on Monday

After years of waiting, the fight to build a sports facility in Knocknacarra is no closer to resolution. Six years ago, the NRG group won a tender to build a leisure centre in the area but that has not materialised. Deputy Fahey has questioned “why there has been such procrastination since they were awarded the tender to proceed with the project.”

In response, a spokesperson for Galway City Council said they “recently considered a report in relation to the Knocknacarra Community Centre Project and the city council will now take the lead role in delivering this much-needed facility for Knocknacarra. In taking this lead role, we are exploring all options in determining the most efficient way of delivering this facility to the people of Knocknacarra.

“The site at Millars Lane is available for community use and Galway City Council is currently in discussion with developers regarding the future development of this project,” it said.
