Tuam received a boost last week with news that a Garda Youth Diversion Project will be set up in the town. Garda Youth Diversion Projects are a mechanism, funded by the government, designed to keep young people out of trouble. Fianna Fáil Senator and General Election candidate Michael Kitt said, "There are already 74 such projects in operation around the country and they have proved highly successful in contributing to improving quality of life within communities and enhancing Garda/community relations. "They aim to facilitate personal development and promote civic responsibility among young people and to help improve long-term employability prospects." The projects are funded by the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform and are administered by the Community Relations Section of the Garda Síochána. Tuam is one of ten towns across the country in which a Garda Youth Diversion Project is to be established. The establishment of these ten Garda Youth Diversion Projects brings the total number of projects to 84. By the end of 2007, there will be a total of 100 such projects in operation - an increase of 88 since 1997. |
