A community group in south Galway is putting forward a candidate in the general election next year, because they do no trust a Government promise to build a sewage treatment plant.

Activists in Kinvara say that a pre-Christmas announcement by the Government that a €3.9 million plant will be built is not enough for them.

"We've had too many promises before," said Dr Marie Hannigan, facilitator with Cairde Cuan Chinn Mhara.

She said the group still intends to run a candidate in the general election unless there is "tangible evidence" that the Government will provide the new facility.

The community group has been lobbying for adequate waste water treatment for the village since 1997.

They disbanded in 2002 on foot of a pre-election promise at that stage but had to reform in 2004 when there was no movement on the issue.
