A group of actors is touring Galway's schools to encourage local children to dispose of their chewing gum responsibly. The actors are taking part in a unique interactive role play presentation with students, which forms part of a tailored schools programme aimed at highlighting the consequences of the irresponsible disposal of gum and litter. Over 660 young people from four secondary schools in Galway have been involved in the scheme so far. The actor tour presentation accompanies a free educational resource pack by the Gum Litter Taskforce. The 'Bin It!' educational resource available to all secondary schools across Ireland is designed to be taught through Civic Social and Political Education (CSPE) classes. The 'Bin It' programme is also relevant to geography and environmental studies, art and ICT. The schools involved in the programme are: Colaiste Chroi Mhuire, An Spideal, Co. Galway; Gort Community School, Gort, Glenamaddy, Co Galway; Garmscoil Mhuire, Athenry, Co Galway, and; Gairmscoil Fheichin Naofa, Corr na Mona, Co. Galway. Paul Kelly, Chairman of the Gum Litter Taskforce, commented: "The actor tour presentation in secondary schools in Galway is a great way to engage with young people on this local environment issue. Only a small minority of people persist in disposing of their used gum incorrectly so it is important to encourage responsible disposal behaviour at an early age."
