There was a slight increase in the number of those unemployed in Galway in December 2008, according to the latest release from the Central Statistics Office (CSO). The figures, announced in the CSO's monthly live register statistics, show an increase of 709 unemployed people signing on in Galway city, compared with December 2006. Unemployment numbers for all the county's large towns were also significantly higher than the same time in 2006. Ballinasloe, for example, had 1,005 people signing on in December 2007 as opposed to 885 in December 2006. There was a total national increase of 2,100 in December 2007 as against the previous month, bringing the unemployment rate to 4.7 per cent. The live register includes part-time workers, seasonal and casual workers, while unemployment is measured in the Quarterly National Household Survey. The news comes in the same week 200 of the 500 Abbott employees who were notified of their redundancy before Christmas left the plant for the last time. |
