The centrepiece of the show, the Fair Green, was swamped by a massive number of horses of all shapes and sizes, accompanied by buyers and sellers on Sunday and Monday.

Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny opened the fair on Sunday, congratulating the local committee on their commitment to staging the 2009 fair and encouraging visitors to enjoy the nine-day festival.

Several prestigious horse competitions took place over the weekend, including the Ballinasloe Credit Union Horse of the Fair, the Hayden's Hotel Cob Lunging Competition and the Concannon's Convenience Stores All- Ireland Pony Lunging Competition.

The nine-day festival continues until this Sunday, when it concludes with the monster fireworks display. Between now and then there is plenty more entertainment of equine, canine and human kind, with shows, competitions and entertainment for all ages.
