Local deputy Michael D Higgins has raised with the Minister for Education and Science the ongoing lack of focus surrounding the development of Clifden Community school- Scoil Phobail Clifden.

"It has been reported that this school was not authorised to progress for the next stage. In this light, I sought clarification from the Minister for Education and Science on the issue. I queried whether the school was included in her department's multi-annual school building and modernisation programme for 2008. I further enquired, that if so, when the project was due to move on to next stage, and if not, when it was envisaged that the next stage of the project would recommence.

"This was particularly pertinent in view of the fact that the school was approved previously to progress to stage three as well as the increased school going population, together with cramped and outdated working conditions and facilities in the school.

"The Minister's reply-in which she bluntly said that 'the further progression of the project will be considered on an on-going basis in the context of her Department's Multi-Annual School Building and Modernisation Programme- was utterly insufficient, and I will continue my efforts for this school and the pupils thereof," said Deputy Higgins.
