Galway's Progressive Democrats will host a visit from Minister for Health Mary Harney on Thursday, 15 November. The Minister will chair the selection convention to fill Senator Ciaran Cannon's vacant county council seat on the same date.

The convention will be held in Carrabane, Athenry, at the Gate Lodge. There will be two candidates for the seat: Loughrea Mayor Michael ?Mogie' Maher and Chairperson of the Loughrea Playground Committee, Sylvia Burke.

Speaking to the Galway Independent on Monday, Ms Burke said she has been very involved in the community in Loughrea, in particular the playground and the youth club, and would welcome the opportunity to "get more done" for the area.

Mr Maher, who is currently Mayor of Loughrea, said he was looking forward to the selection and was hopeful of winning, as he has been an elected town councillor since 2002.

This selection convention was originally scheduled for Monday, 15 October but was deferred to coincide with Ms Harney's visit.
