Members of the public are being invited to voice their opinions about local representation as part of the Local Electoral Area Review being undertaken by the Department of the Environment, Heritage, and Local Government.

Minister for the Environment John Gormley has established two committees to review the areas. They will report during June.
The review is being conducted in preparation for the 2009 local elections.

The country’s population has changed considerably since the last review was conducted ten years ago, with suburban areas and commuter towns growing considerably.

Areas such as Oranmore and Knocknacarra have grown massively since 1998. Both Galway city and county will be part of the review along with other areas around the country.

PD Councillor Donal Lyons recently called for more councillors for Galway city to reflect the growth in population. The results of this review may come as an answer to his call.

Fianna Fáil TD Noel Treacy has welcomed the announcement.

Members of the public are being asked to make submissions on the issue before Thursday 14 March. They can do this by emailing This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or by post to Room 203, Custom House, Dublin 1. Submissions regarding County Galway should be addressed to Secretary, Electoral Area Boundary Committee.
