Gort still on the boil E-mail

Households in Gort are still without water this week, as local authorities struggle to find the source of the contamination to the water supply.

A boil water notice was introduced in the Gort area last Thursday, 21 August, after a recent sample failed to meet drinking water standards due to the detection of a low level of the indicator organism 'total coliforms'.

While there was immediate speculation that the contamination may be linked to last year's cryptosporidium outbreak, Galway County Council has since confirmed that there is no trace of the bug in the water supply and the pollution was most likely due to excessive rainfall in the area. It is not yet known how long the boil notice will continue.
