Gort and Loughrea last week became two of the latest towns to get approval for connection to the Bord Gáis network.

Minister for the Energy, Communications and Natural Resources, Eamon Ryan welcome the Commission for Energy Regulation's approval of Bord Gáis viability studies on several places around the country including the two Galway towns.

Subject to the sourcing of major industrial customers, Gort and Loughrea, along with Cashel, Cahir, Monasterevin and Ballinrobe, will be connected to the network. Bord Gáis will spend approximately €23 million.

Minister Ryan said last week: "This is a positive step both for Bord Gáis and for the towns involved. It will provide residents in these areas with greater choice in terms of their energy needs.

"The extension of the network will provide potentially reduced energy costs for businesses in the longer term. It also makes these towns more attractive for new industry locating in or around their environs. Natural gas has the added advantage of emitting lower levels of greenhouse gas than oil or coal. Residents and commercial interests in these towns will be happy in the knowledge that they will have greater choice and cleaner fuel supplies. Greater connectivity to networks such as these serves only to enhance the development of our regional centres."

The announcement has also been welcomed by Noel Treacy, TD.
