A Georgian man has been remanded in custody following a high speed Garda chase through the city at the weekend during which, it is alleged, a Garda patrol car was rammed. George Mikrtichiani, with an address at 11 Mayfield Grove, Athlone, who celebrated his 23rd birthday last Saturday, was arrested by Garda John White at Glen Dara, Galway, on Sunday and was brought in custody before Galway District Court this week. Mikrtichiani faces five counts of dangerous driving, two counts of hit and run and another for causing criminal damage to a Garda patrol car at various locations around the city on Sunday night. Garda White said the accused made no reply when the charges were put to him and he indicated that further charges may be preferred at a later date depending on the outcome of a breath alcohol test. Defence solicitor, Olivia Traynor said her client had been working in the construction industry here for the last four years and was a Georgian national. She made no application for bail. Judge Mary Fahy remanded the accused in custody to appear before Harristown District (Remand) Court, which is attached to Castlerea Prison, this Friday, 5 Septem |
