A Garda Regional Response Unit (RSU) that will deal with criminal activity in the West of Ireland will be launched in Salthill in February. As part of the national plan to roll out RSUs in all regions of the country, Salthill Garda Station will be furnished with the new unit made up of four sergeants and 24 gardaí, which has been put in place to respond to siege situations and criminals using firearms. Garda Superintendent John Gilligan said the RSU would wear regular Garda uniform and would not routinely carry weapons. "They are the second response to certain crime scenes that might have a siege situation of firearms involved, but they will also be present at certain roadblocks, robberies and searches of private residences. "They will have Volvo cars armed with certain weapons, such as Taser guns, bean-bag guns, pistols and machine guns. All the RSU members have been training in Templemore for the last three months, undertaking firearm training and tactical training and will be ready for the launch next month," he explained. |
