Galway Gardaí are to take part in a torch run next week to raise money for Special Olympics.

The torch run, in aid of Special Olympic Ireland, will be arriving in Galway on Monday 24 September at approximately 5pm. The torch will be carried by Garda runners from the Tuam Road into Eyre Square, through the city centre and out to Salthill. It will end in Blackrock with a greeting ceremony for the runners and members of the Special Olympic team at 6pm.

Special Olympics Ireland made a request to the Garda Síochana and The Police Service of Northern Ireland earlier this year asking them to hold a torch run preceding this year’s Special Olympics World Summer Games, which will be held in Shanghai in October.

As a result, the torch run will take place from the 23 to 26 September on four different routes. The four routes will converge in Dublin on Wednesday 26 September. The aim of the torch run is to visit as many locations as possible that athletes attending the games are from.

A fundraising gala concert will be held in the Salthill Hotel at 8pm following the torch run. The event will be hosted by radio personality Jimmy Norman with entertainment from Trad on the Prom, Sean Keane and Marc Roberts. Tickets are available on the door to support this worthy cause.
