Galway is to remember those who have lost their lives to suicide by holding a candlelight vigil in the city. Earlier this week Irish charity, 3TS (Turn The Tide of Suicide) announced plans to take its suicide prevention message nationwide, with a series of candlelight vigil events to mark World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September 2007.
The Galway Vigil will take place at St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, Market Street, in the city on September 10 from 8pm to 9pm. Broadcaster Gareth O’Callaghan will lead the commemoration. RTE's GAA television anchor and commentator Michael Lyster, also a Galway native, will be the special guest speaker on the night. Kevin Malone, co-founder of 3T’s and the head of the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health, St Vincent’s Hospital, Dublin, will also attend the event.
“Times have changed since we held our first 3TS Candlelight Vigil in Dublin back in 2004. At that time the wider community did not know the actual extent of the problem of suicide.
“Three years on, suicide and its prevention have been given an increasing amount of attention. Nevertheless the problem sadly appears to be escalating. With latest research citing approx. 600 deaths each year attributed to suicide, it is the leading cause of death in young people in this country”. The 3TS, along with other members of the Government watchdog body, Action On Suicide Alliance, is currently canvassing key local and national organisations involved in the area of suicide prevention, with the aim of submitting key recommendations on the issue of suicide to An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern in September 2007. Each event, which is open to the public, will be marked with a minutes’ silence to remember those who have lost their lives to suicide in this country.
