Galway is to get state-of-the art new trains by the end of May. New trains for the Sligo to Dublin route were unveiled before Christmas, and it has been revealed that similar trains should be travelling the Galway route by May 2008. According to Frank Fahey, Chairman of the Oireachtas Transport Committee says the delay is due to a wait by Iarnr?d Eireann for the full six-car sets which will fit 400 passengers, rather than beginning to run the trains without the full complement of carriages. The trains made by Mitsui in Japan and Rotem, a Korean company, will be funded by Transport 21 and the European Regional Development Fund, are already servicing the Limerick and Cork routes. They are part of a €400m revamp of Ireland's outdated train service, which will see it go from the EU's oldest models to it's newest. The trains have automated PA and display systems, as well as electronic seat reservation. They will also dispel some issues passengers have traditionally had with freezing temperatures in the old trains, as they will be air-conditioned. |
