Upon completion of the new road network between Galway and Dublin, the average driver will spend €7.40 on the journey to the capital.

The new Ballinasloe bypass is set to be tolled, and on today's prices will cost €1.70. This is based on the cost of similar bypasses, such as the N8 Fermoy bypass and the M1 Drogheda bypass. However, as the road is not due for completion until 2010, inflation could have an impact on that price.

The M4 between Kinnegad and Kilcock is currently tolled at €2.70 per car.

For anyone who has to pass the M50, cars not registered with toll tags or video payment will incur a charge of €3, while those registered cost marginally less.

Add to this the price of petrol, road tax, insurance, car maintenance and the cup of coffee needed to keep you awake, and public transport could become a far more attractive option.

An adult return bus ticket with Bus Eireann currently costs €17.10.
