Galway City-based songwriter Tommy Moran is celebrating this week,
after the song he jointly wrote with ‘Irish Times’ journalist John
Waters, was chosen as this year’s Eurovision entry to be performed by
Irish traditional band Dervish.
A native of Castlerea, Tommy played for several years with a number of groups and showbands. He subsequently worked as an electronics engineer but continued to play and write music. In 2000 and 2001, he won the Glinsk Song Contest with songs co-written with his father-in-law, J.J. Flannelly. He was short listed for Eurovision on a previous occasion. The public voted in their thousands by telephone and text last weekend to secure ‘They Can’t Stop The Spring’ its place in the 52nd Eurovision Song Contest Final on Saturday 12 May in Finland. The song is constructed around the reported response of Czech leader Alexander Dubcek in 1968, when he watched the Russian tanks ploughing over the flowers thrown at them by students, protesting the Soviet suppression of the Prague Spring. |
