It may have given a number of people a couple of sleepless nights but the Galway International Rally, which took place in the county at the weekend, provided a €10 million boost for the local economy.

According to the organisers of the event, in the region of 80,000 people attended the three-day event, booking out local shops, restaurants, B&Bs and hotels in the city and county months in advance.

However, it wasn't all plain sailing for the event. According to Galway Gardaí, 60 people were arrested in the city over the weekend for public order and road traffic offences.

The Rally left Galway on Saturday morning for 105 stage kilometres in a three-stage configuration, where centralised servicing was available in Portumna Mart with stops at Gurtymadden, Portumna and Eyrecourt.

Councillor Donal Lyons from Knocknacarra said because of the high level of Garda activity and the extra presence, the Rally "wasn't as bad as other years".

He said the majority of people who attend the Rally every year are "good-spirited, good-natured and only there for the enjoyment of the weekend". He said it was a small minority who gave the Rally a bad name.

Rally spokesperson Mr Ultan Burke said 98 per cent of those who attended the event were law abiding citizens. "It is unfortunate some of them give other car enthusiasts a bad name," he said.
