A Galway pizza maker's quest for perfection in a pie was rewarded this week when his team's 'Jameson and Black' pizza won first prize at the World Pizza Championships in Las Vegas. ![]() They secured two wins at the competition, with their 'Jameson and Black' and 'Michaelangelo' pizzas finishing first and third in the 'Open Region' section of the competition, defeating entries from Canada, Germany and experts Italy en-route to the award. The 'Jameson & Black' pizza is made up of a Jameson Whiskey dough base, Clonakilty black pudding, crispy bacon, Cashel blue cheese and Jameson infused apple. Speaking to the Galway Independent this week, Michael, who manages the restaurant in the Westside Shopping Centre, said it was an unexpected result. "We are over the moon with the win in Vegas. The first day didn't go too well for us and we were joking about taking a photo of the announcement on the second day. Then they called our name out. We were dumbfounded. "There were two Italian entries in the competition. We were delighted to beat them, as they were so impressive the previous day. It is always great to get one up on the experts," he said. After such a busy week stateside, Michael expected a bit of down time on his return, but it has been the total opposite. "Last week was phenomenal. Then with all the publicity around the competition, it has been mad since we returned." Bistro Bianconi will launch the 'Jameson and Black' next Monday and it will be available for delivery. "All we aim for is keeping our customers happy. We are all about the service we provide. Hopefully this can bring a smile to people's faces in all the doom and gloom," Michael added. The Italian pizza championships take place in Milan in three weeks time where they will seek to add to their already strained trophy cabinet. |
