Galway heritage site under investigation E-mail

A Galway heritage site is under investigation by the Gardaí after it emerged that thousands of euro in ticket monies had gone missing at the site. The financial discrepancy only came to light in the Comptroller and Auditor-General's report for 2006.

While the Gardaí and OPW are remaining tight-lipped about the ongoing investigation, staff at two of Galway's three largest sites, Connemara National Park and Coole Park, have said they are unaware of any investigation, while management at Dun Aonghus say the Aran Islands attraction is not the site under investigation. Many of the other sites would not have visitor numbers to justify the sum of money involved, which implies a visitor intake amounting to thousands of people per year.

Heritage sites are run by the Office of Public Works and include areas of natural beauty, such as the Connemara National Park and Coole Park. Man-made historical structures such as Dún Aonghus, Athenry Castle, Aughnanure Castle, and Portumna Castle are also included in the category.

The site is one of two Office of Public Works run heritage sites being investigated by Gardaí. The other is in Co. Kerry.
