Galway's Palestine Children's Appeal is to continue its fundraising this month with a sponsored climb of Croagh Patrick. Last month's Gig for Gaza with special guest Dónal Lunny raised €7,000, but this month's event will require more energy and commitment from contributors. According to the group, the purpose of both events, however, is the same: to purchase much-needed medical supplies for the people of Gaza. So far, 25 people have signed up for the 'Ramble up the Reek'. It will assemble at 9am in Murrisk Car Park, on the Louisburg Road, west of Westport. The ramble will be led by well-known Irish climber of TG4 fame Dermot Somers. Dermot's tales of his adventures from Siberia to the Sahara should provide an added boost to his fellow climbers. There will be no shortage of experienced climbers on the day, including Bernie Ní Chuinn of Raidió na Gaeltachta, who has climbed most of the mountains in Ireland. Eugene Lamb and Tony Small, two well-known Irish traditional musicians, will be on hand too to get their fellow climbers into step at the base at Murrisk. Anyone interested in participating should contact the Galway Palestine Children's Appeal: Dr Philomena McKenna, 087-7661917, Patricia Assalia 086-3726778, or Treasa Ní Cheannabháin 087-8380224, who can provide sponsorship cards and more information. Would-be climbers are advised to wear good climbing boots, warm but light rain gear and have a flask of water. Stronger stuff will be available after the climb in the Tavern the organisers promise. |
