Galway Fire Brigade saved the lives of two men from the River Corrib in daring river rescues in the past week.

In two separate incidents, members of the fire service, wearing special diving suits, pulled two men from the river.

The latest incident occurred on Sunday morning around 10am when a man was rescued from Claddagh Quay.

It's understood members of the public threw the man a rope before one person ran into the fire station to alert the fire brigade.

Two members of the fire service rescued the man from the water and he was taken to University College Hospital Galway (UCHG).

Meanwhile, on Wednesday last, 4 July, a man was rescued after he fell into the water at Wolfetone Bridge beside Jury's Hotel.

The incident happened around 8.30pm and again two members of the fire service pulled him out of the river.

The Galway Lifeboat was called out to the incident but later stood down when the man was brought safely to shore.

The two incidents occurred just a short time after a well-known city man lost his life after falling into the canal at the lock gates behind the Roisín Dubh pub.

Jack Mernagh of Saint Joseph's Avenue died on Thursday 28 June after he fell into the water on the Wednesday evening.
