Furniture will now be included in HSE inspections of private nursing homes, following representations by Galway West Deputy, Michael D Higgins.
The move has come after it emerged that some patients in private nursing homes were suffering due to inadequate furniture.
Deputy Higgins said that the use of some furniture, which restricted movement, had been raised with him by the relatives and friends of a certain number of patients.
He has welcomed the confirmation that furniture, in terms of design, comfort and adequacy, is included in the criteria set down by the HSE for examination by nursing home inspection teams.
