Long-awaited road works in Knocknacarra are finally to go ahead, following the news that €540,000 in funding has been included for the project in the Road Transportation Programme.

The funding was announced at Monday night's Galway City Council meeting and was welcomed by local councillors, including Cllr Donal Lyons, who has long campaigned for road improvement works on the Barna Road/Ballymoneen Road junction, the Ballymoneen Road south of the roundabout and the Shangort/Ballymoneen Road.

"As a local councillor in the area, I have received numerous representations regarding the poor condition of the Ballymoneen Road. Consequently, I have lobbied officials at Galway City Council at every opportunity to have funding allocated to undertake these road works and I am delighted that following my representations substantial funding has now being included in this year's roads programme and work on improving the roads will commence this year.

"Funding of €350,000 has been included for a new junction layout at the Ballymoneen Road/Barna Road junction, with work scheduled to commence June to October '08. Funding of €100,000 has been included for the Shangort Road/Ballymoneen Road, with work scheduled for May – June '08. €80,000 has been included for the Ballymoneen Road south of the roundabout, which will include the provision of footpaths and public lighting with work to commence May – June '08 and a further €10,000 for footpaths on the Ballymoneen Road," he said.

However, Cllr Lyons highlighted a need for further funding for public safety measures for the people of Knocknacarra.

"I want to thank the officials at the Roads and Transportation Department for their help in securing this funding both from local resources and from the Department of Transport, but I will continue to make representations for funding for the Upper Ballymoneen Road and the Upper Clybaun Road, which need urgent funding for the provision of public lighting and footpaths."
