One local business is vowing to do its bit for the people of earthquake-hit Chile, by offering free calls to their relatives living in Galway. Communications company FoneNet Galway, located on Dominick Street and Eyre Street, announced this week that they will offer free calls to Chile in an effort to help the thousands of people who have been affected by the natural disaster. The death tolls resulting from Saturday's earthquake now stands at 723, but this is expected to rise in the coming days. Speaking to the Galway Independent this week, a spokesperson for FoneNet Galway said that there had already been a huge uptake on the offer. "A lot of people had been coming in for the last number of days and I felt a bit guilty charging them to be honest when they're just calling home to see if they're parents are safe, so we decided to just advertise it. On Sunday alone, we would have seen 20 people coming in and again on Monday there was around the same amount and that's just on Dominick Street." FoneNet Galway plans to continue the offer until Wednesday 10 March but said they may extend it if the situation worsens in Chile. Anyone wishing to avail of the free calls should drop into one of FoneNet's offices on Dominick Street and Eyre Street, bringing proof of their Chilean citizenship if possible.
