Former County Mayor Cllr Sean Canney has been elected chairman of the County Development Board. Galway County Development Board (CDB) was established in March 2000, to provide a mechanism for increased co-ordination and co-operation in planning for the social, economic and cultural development of the County. It also aims to bring about greater integration among public bodies in the design and delivery of services. There are 34 such boards nation-wide.

There are currently 32 members on the CDB representing local government, local development, state agencies, the community fora and the farming, trade union and business sectors.

On announcement of his new position, Cllr Canney said that he was looking forward to working with all the members of the board for the betterment of the county, stating that Galway is a large county and is very diverse in its needs and challenges.
