The first phase of traffic calming in Shantalla has been completed after extensive lobbying by local people and local representatives. Local councillor Colette Connolly has welcomed the news, despite delays in implementing the scheme. Since she was elected in 2004, Cllr Connolly has placed a series of motions in relation to introduce traffic calming in the area. She hopes this will be the first step in counteracting excessive vehicular traffic in the area and will deter motorists from using Shantalla as a convenient access route to the hospital. She has asked that additional yellow lines be put in place on the street corners to improve sight lines, which are currently severely jeopardised. Councillor Connolly said, however, that the council has failed to provide pro-active enforcement to ensure compliance, particularly at Scoil Bhride national school, where parents continue to park on corners and on double yellow lines. She has called on the council to ensure that the Community and Traffic Wardens patrol the area on a regular basis, as well as asking the community guard to take action in relation to traffic issues. Cllr Connolly said that at a recent EGM, Shantalla residents rejected pay and display parking as a solution to the parking crisis as it would simply increase vehicular traffic in the area given the estates' proximity to health services at UCHG, NUIG Clinical Science, Shantalla Clinic and Community Care. |
