Gardaí have named the 46-year-old Polish man who was killed in a house fire last weekend as Waldek Banaszewski.

The State Pathologist Marie Cassidy was in Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe on Monday to examine his body.

The fire broke out in a rented bungalow in Taughmaconnell and the alarm was raised at around 5am.

The five other people in the house, including Mr Banaszewski's wife and 21-year-old son, escaped unharmed. The fire is believed to have started at the cooker in the kitchen and it was reported the man died from smoke inhalation.

Gardaí said Mr Banaszewski worked for a Polish construction company in Athlone.
