Gardai are treating a fire in a Mervue butchers as "suspicious" after being called to investigate the situation by the fire brigade. At 10.40pm on Saturday evening last, the Galway fire brigade was called to McGrath's butcher shop in Mervue to deal with a blaze at the premises.

According to a spokesperson for the Galway Gardaí, the fire services were "not altogether happy" with their initial investigations. The scene was then sealed off to allow further investigations to take place.

The initial investigations have proven inconclusive, but the Garda spokesperson has confirmed "further inquiries and forensic tests are currently taking place and that it is currently being treated as suspicious".
