Fine Gael leader, Enda Kenny TD and Socialist Party leader, Joe Higgins are among those who will take part in a debate on the merits of the Lisbon Treaty at NUI, Galway next Monday, 25 January at 8pm.

The debate is entitled ‘The Lisbon Treaty – What’s in it for Ireland?’ The panel on the night will include Deputy Enda Kenny, Minister Éamon O Cuív and Deputy Michael D Higgins who will all speak in favour of the treaty, while leader of the Socialist Party Joe Higgins, Patricia McKenna of the People’s Movement and Declan Ganley of the Libertas ‘Vote No’ campaign will speak against. Dr Iognáid Ó Muircheartaigh, President of NUIG, will chair the debate.

The Political Discussion Society has said it is delighted to have attracted such a prestigious panel for the event, which will be the biggest to be held in the country to date on the EU Reform Treaty. Auditor David Geary said that the society was proud of its record of educating students in a balanced format.

“The Political Discussion Society is delighted and honoured to host this timely and important debate which speaks to the upcoming referendum as much as to the broader direction of the EU.  Ireland is the New Hampshire of the EU and will provide an interesting litmus test on the future of the EU. The society is proud of its record of educating students on various elements of the political world and takes great pleasure in the opportunity to educate the people of Connacht and indeed the students of the university on this pivotal vote in a balanced and informative format.”
