Three volunteers have been honoured for their commitment to Enable Ireland, Galway. Paula O'Flaherty and Ann Cheevers, a mother and daughter team, have volunteered with Enable Ireland for over ten years, supporting many events and activities. They assisted with activities including the annual flag days and church-gate collections as well as participating in the Women's Mini Marathon each year and recruiting people to participate with them. They actively get involved and volunteer in all aspects of fundraising with Enable Ireland. Lorraine Tansey, Volunteer Co-ordinator with the Community Knowledge Initiative at NUI Galway, also received a special award for her commitment to volunteering within the community. Lorraine co-ordinates the student volunteer programme ALIVE at NUI, Galway, and has encouraged, inspired and supported students who wish to volunteer locally with numerous local charities including Enable Ireland, Galway. She was recognised for her support of volunteering in general and for her own personal voluntary involvement with Enable Ireland. Speaking at the presentation, Joanne Murphy, Fund-raising Co-ordinator at Enable Ireland, congratulated recipients of the Gold Badge Volunteer Award and thanked them for their continued commitment to both Enable Ireland and volunteering in general. She said, "Enable Ireland Galway is very lucky to have a broad base of people who actively support and volunteer with Enable Ireland. Without the support of people who are willing to assist with events and activities as volunteers, it would be very difficult to sustain the level of activity carried out by the fund-raising office." "Volunteers are very important to the success of our events both financially and in raising awareness of the work carried out by the team at Enable Ireland Galway. Fashion shows, charity cycles, Christmas swims, fun runs, no matter how big or small the event, we value the individual contribution made by all those volunteers who give their time so generously to fund-raise for Enable Ireland Galway." The number of volunteers in Ireland fell by one third between 1992 and 2002. Despite active Government support of volunteer initiatives, attracting and retaining volunteers becomes more challenging each year. Enable Ireland has many dedicated volunteers countrywide. More than 300 people help out in its charity shops and many others raise funds through collections and events. Their support is much valued. Some of the volunteers are busy working people who give a few hours when they can, or students who want to make a difference. Many are parents or older people who have some time on their hands, or who would like to meet people and socialise. There are numerous opportunities available for people who wish to volunteer with Enable Ireland Galway, including opportunities for fund-raising, working with the children's therapy activities and in the Enable Ireland shop on High Street.
