East side 'the poor relation' E-mail

Sinn Fein's candidate in the East Ward, Martin Concannon has said the east side of the city continues to be the 'poor relation' when it comes to sports facilities. The lack of a public swimming pool is a particular problem, in countering anti-social behaviour and the drink and drug culture, he says.

Concannon rejects the view that projects, such as a public swimming pools, are unrealistic at a time when we all need to be tightening our belts.

"Public swimming pools should be seen as a basic part of the local infrastructure. And investing in such projects will create jobs and the pool will pay for itself. But let's face it; ordinary people didn't gain from the Celtic Tiger. All we experienced was a 'Rip-off Republic'. It is not working people that should be facing the pain of this downturn but the big shot bankers, developers, builders and rotten politicians that got the country into this mess."
