The East Galway community has been bolstered in their fight against an incinerator in the area by comments made by Environment Minister John Gormley over the weekend.
The East Galway Against Incineration Committee (EGAI) has welcomed a statement from Environment Minister, John Gormley, who said that incinerators are now “out of the equation” when it comes to waste management policy. The EGAI is fighting a proposal to build a waste-to-energy plant at the Tynagh Mines site in East Galway. The proposal is currently with An Bord Pleanála.
“We welcome the comments made by the Environment Minister,” said EGAI spokesperson Noreen Robinson.
“We hope this will put us in a good position in our fight against the location of an incinerator in Tynagh, and trust he will not do a u-turn on his comments,” she said.
The Environment Minister said incinerators are “out of the equation” and no longer a key part of government policy while speaking at the Festival of World Cultures in Dun Laoghaire. He said the emphasis must be placed on reducing, re-using and recycling.
