Former Fine Gael Leader Alan Dukes will be one of the keynote speakers at a party endorsed public meeting on the forthcoming Lisbon Treaty Referendum in the Moycarn Lodge and Arena, Ballinasloe at 9pm this Thursday, 29 May. The meeting will also feature contributions from Fine Gael's MEP for the Ireland West constituency, Jim Higgins, who is one of five MEPs representing the party in the European Parliament. Leader of the Fine Gael party from 1987 to 1990, Alan Dukes was appointed Minister for Agriculture on his first day in Dáil éireann back in 1981. Mr Dukes also served as Finance Minister in the mid 1980s. A superb orator, he has a deep and passionate knowledge of the European Union and its institutions and is recognised globally for his contributions on the EU Union. Next Thursday's meeting is one of over 50 such public forums the Fine Gael party have organised nationwide as part of their high visibility referendum campaign. To date in the Ireland West constituency, the party have hosted public meetings in Athlone, Galway city, Letterkenny, Sligo, Carrick-on-Shannon, Longford and Castlebar, affording the public an opportunity to express their views on the forthcoming referendum. The meeting will also feature contributions from the party's Oireachtas representatives, Deputies Ulick Burke and Paul Connaughton, as well as the party's local public representatives Cllrs Michael Finnerty, Michael Mullins and Sean Tully. As part of their campaign, the party has also undertaken a massive leafleting and billboard campaign, with an extensive newspaper advertising campaign to follow prior to polling day. Recently, party Leader Enda Kenny TD launched the party's regional campaign in support of a 'yes' vote on the Banks of the River Shannon in Athlone, accompanied by the party's Oireachtas representatives from the region. All members of the public are invited to attend this public meeting in the Moycarn Lodge. The hotel is located on the R357 Shannonbridge road, about a quarter of a mile from Ballinasloe town centre. |
